"Advocacy in Action"
This morning our intern Sara attended the monthly meeting of Huntsville's Youth Services Council.
I assisted a caller who is caring for her 14 year old great-nephew. It is reported that he has been aggressively physically assaulted by his father, possibly not his biological father, because he learned the boy is gay. The 14 year old escaped the house and a school counselor reported the situation to DHR and he is in a safe place with his great-aunt. I had a phone conference with the school counselor identifying myself and expressing my concerns regarding the situation. I also advised the great-aunt regarding her planned conversations with the school counselor and the DHR social worker. Sara and I worked together to advise the great-aunt. I expect to have a follow-up conversation with her tomorrow.
I began contacting people at Alabama A&M University regarding a proposed community forum following the upcoming visit of Louis Farrakhan. The Inter-faith Mission Service, the Jewish Federation, and I met with the University president Tuesday to discuss concerns about Mr. Farrakhan's visit.
Tonight at our North Alabama Peer Support group, NAPS (our adult group) we provided an opportunity for people to write letters to state legislators in support of funding for Alabama's HIV/AIDS service organizations. Mary Elizabeth Marr, Executive Director of the AIDS Action Coalition spoke to those who attended. Eight people were present and I believe others who could not attend will also write letters. We did this last year in conjunction with the UAH GSA.
